Tiruttani - Ocean Of Devotees

Tiruttani is one of the very famous temple in tamilnadu and major source of income. Lord muruga is the deity here. Tamil Nadu has 6 places that belong to Lord Muruga. Lord Muruga halted along with his entire army at around 6 places what are called as “arupadai veedu i.e. this is 5th Padaiveedu . The distance from Tirupati to Tiruttani is around 66 km and it generally takes around 1 hour and 30 minutes.

Tiruttani represents the site where subramanya stayed after destroying the demon surapadaman. This is the same place where Load subranmanya married srivalli.

The other five shrines include; Palani (100 km west of Madurai),Swamimalai (150 km east of Madurai),Tirupparangunram(5 km from Madurai),Pazhamudircholai (10 km north of Madurai) and Thiruchendur (100 km south of Madurai).

The temple located on the Hill named Thanigai which can be reached by taking 60 steps. The temple has main shrines namely Murugan in the form of shakidharar and the shrines of Valli and Deivayanai in another 2 shrines.

It is said that Lord Murugan wants to marry Srivalli, daughter of King Nambiranjan asked Ganesha for help. Ganesha took the form of an elephant and frightened Srivalli. Murugan then saving srivalli expressed his wish to marry her which srivalli agreed. As a gift to the marriage Indhra gave a sandalwood stone which is now also being used to prepare sandal wood paste for the idol.

Another interesting story is that Lord Murugan married to Devasena , daughter of Indhra. As a marriage gift he gave Iravath ( white elephant ). From that time, the wealth of Indhra started to decrease. Noticing this Lord Murugan decided to return Iravath which Indhra disagreed. Instead requested Murugan to let the Iravath face him ( east ). this is the reason why the elephant image faces the east in the temple.

One more legend is that during the fight with Tarakasure , a discus thrown by the daemon hits Lord Muruguans chest which can still be seen as a hallow region on the main idol chest.
